ICT AUDIT FOR TEACHERS

It is a national requirement that all new teachers are able to use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) effectively in their teaching and at a personal professional level. This audit is designed to help you judge your own current capability. Please be as honest as you can and don't panic if you have to say 'no experience' to almost everything.

WHAT TO DO

1. Fill in the general information section about yourself. This is to ensure that you are not duplicated on the database. It will not be used to identify you.

2. For each of the ICT capabilities, click the button for the choice that best describes your current capability.

GENERAL ICT COMPETENCES

1. Using a computer
Computers terrify me: I have hardly ever used them
I can only use computers if someone else shows me what to do or helps me log on first
I am happy to experiment; I find out how programs work by trial and error, or by consulting the manual from time to time

2. Using a Graphical User Interface (e.g. Windows)
I have little or no experience of using a graphical user interface
I can select and run programs using a mouse
I can switch between open windows and maximise, minimise and close windows

3. Handling Files
I have little or no experience of handling computer files
I can move, copy and delete files (e.g. make a backup of a file on a floppy disc)
I can move, copy and delete files and create directories or folders of files

4. Sharing Information Between Programs
I have little or no experience of sharing information between programs
I can 'cut and paste' information between programs (eg place a graphic produced in a Paint program into a word-processed document)
I can create dynamic links between programs (eg place a chart within a report which is updated as the data in a linked spreadsheet is changed)

5. Connecting a Computer System
I have little or no experience of connecting a computer system
I can connect a basic computer system (eg processor, monitor, keyboard, mouse)
I can connect additional input/output devices (eg scanner, printer) and load related software

USING ICT TO FIND THINGS OUT

6. Interrogating a Database
I have little or no experience of interrogating a database
I can search a database using simple keywords or phrases
I can search a database using two or more search words combined using AND, OR or NOT to make the search more specific

7. Creating a Database
I have little or no experience of creating a structured database where data is divided into fixed headings (sometimes called fields)
I can create a simple structured database taking into account the number and types of fields required (e.g. personal telephone directory)
I can plan and organise the structure of a new database for a particular purpose, design a method for collecting data and document its use for others

8. Finding Information on CD-ROM encyclopaedias/reference discs
I have little or no experience of finding information from a CD-ROM
I can use indexes (of subjects, authors, etc), keywords and narrowing-down strategies to find information that is held on a CD-ROM
I can find information using a variety of electronic data sources. I can, print from them and transfer information into other packages from them

9. Searching the World Wide Web
I have little or no experience of using the World Wide Web (WWW)
I can use a WWW browser to follow links and view, save and print pages
I can use a 'search engine' to find information on the WWW and refine the search, if required, using two or more search terms

10. Data Logging
I have little or no experience of using simple data logger to capture data from the environment or an experiment (e.g. temperature, light, velocity)
I can use a data logger to capture data from the environment or an experiment
I can capture data using a data logger and transfer it to a computer for further analysis

USING ICT TO TRY THINGS OUT

11. Using a Spreadsheet
I have little or no experience of using a spreadsheet program
I can enter numerical data, perform simple calculations and create charts
I can use a spreadsheet to create and explore mathematically based models (eg mortgage payments, population growth)

12. Using a logo program
I have little or no experience of using a logo program
I can move the screen turtle around the screen using direct commands
I can create procedures and use variables to drive the screen turtle

13. Controlling Devices
I have little or no experience of using a computer to control devices
I can use a computer to operate a simple control system (e.g. to steer a wheeled robot around an obstacle course, control a set of traffic lights)
I can set up a control system which modifies its action depending on new information (e.g. a lighting system which comes 'on' when it gets dark)

14. Programming
I have little or no experience of programming a computer
I know how to write a series of instructions which a computer will follow to carry out a function (e.g. a macro in EXCEL)
I can use a programming language such as Logo or BASIC

USING ICT TO COMMUNICATE

15. Word processing
I have little or no experience of using a word processor program
I can enter and edit text, save and re-open and print text files
I can format text (eg change fonts, margins and indents, paragraph layouts), add headers/footers and use a spelling checker and other proofing tools

16. Using Graphics Packages
I have little or no experience of using a graphics package
I can use a simple 'paint' program to produce pictures
I can use a graphics package to modify photographic images (eg resize, adjust colours and change graphics mode) captured by a scanner or camera

17. Desk Top Publishing
I have little or no experience of using a desk top publishing (DTP) program (or equivalent features in a word processor program)
I can incorporate tables, charts and graphics (eg clip art and photos) into a word processed document
I can create documents based on individual 'frames' for text, pictures and tables

18. Multimedia Authoring
I have little or no experience of using a multimedia authoring program
I can create simple media pages that combine text and pictures
I can create complex multimedia files that incorporate text, graphics, sound, animation and video

I can create simple Web pages by saving documents in html format
I can create pages using a Web page authoring program

20. Using E-mail
I have little or no experience of using e-mail software
I can send, receive, save and print e-mail messages
